Ricoh South Africa gets behind World Environment Day with its Global Eco Action Initiative

Johannesburg, 5 June 2009 - Ricoh South Africa (Pty) Ltd. digital office solutions and production printing specialist, today announced its continued support of today’s annual United Nations World Environment Day. In conjunction with this, Ricoh employees around the world will unite for the company’s Global Eco Action day by participating in a range of energy saving initiatives that contribute to the Ricoh’s environmental goals. Ricoh’s overall strategy is to reduce its C02 consumption by 88% by 2050.

This year will be the fourth time Ricoh has promoted the United Nations World Environment Day to its employees.  Last year 43,000 Ricoh employees in 65 Ricoh companies in 31 countries participated, totalling a reduction of 14 tonnes of CO2 emissions.  Across the world billboards and advertisement towers were switched off for a minimum of 24 hours.  In Europe, activities included a team of eco-warriors promoting energy saving tips for staff and other tenants in the building; employees checking the pressure of tyres to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions; car sharing, cycling and increased public transport for commuters.

This year Ricoh will turn off lights and electrical appliances wherever possible at the office and at home.  Many employees will choose to walk to work or travel by public transport and bicycle instead of using their cars.  Across Europe, activities include placing extra bike racks in the parking lot and demonstrating more efficient cars to employees.

Kevin Wilson-Smith, TQM Manager, Ricoh South Africa says, “For many years Ricoh has been committed to being a good corporate citizen. Today we continue to innovate with the environment in mind so that our customers benefit from energy efficient products and solutions that have limited environmental impact across the supply chain. The UN’s World Environment Day is a fantastic opportunity to share our proactive approach to environmental responsibility through our Global Eco Action Initiative.”
